Charlotte Bruus Christensen ASC, DFF / Black Narcissus

Cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen ASC ventured into directorial territory for the first time when making three-part mini-series Black Narcissus – the BBC, DNA Films and FX co-production based on Rumer Godden’s 1939 novel.
Zoe Mutter caught up with her in a fascinating interview in which she shares her references for the film, discusses the challenges of shooting at almost 4,000 feet in the mountains of Nepal, and adopting delicate camera movements to tell a story of stifled desires.

Jost Vacano ASC BVK to be honoured with EnergaCAMERIMAGE lifetime award

Jost Vacano ASC/BVK, born in 1934 in Osnabrück, is one of the most successful German cinematographers. His interest in cinema developed relatively early in his life. He learned filmmaking first by going to the cinema, then on the sets of short films by Peter Schamoni. The collaboration with the director resulted in a dynamically developing television career in the 1960s. Working with such directors as Hansgünther Heyme, Peter Zadek, Wilm ten Haaf, Eberhard Itzenplitz, Rainer Wolffhardt, Rolf Hädrich and Peter Beauvais, Jost Vacano taught himself the tools of the trade through autodidactic practical experience. His interest in technology allowed him to try out new possibilities and invent devices and shooting aids that were not readily available at the time.
“The Lost Honor Of Katharina Blum”, Volker Schlöndorff, and “Das Boot”, Wolfgang Petersen, is only two of Jost Vacano well know films.

Agnès Godard, AFC gets Angénieux Tribute at Cannes

On Friday, July 16, 2021, Agnès Godard, AFC, was honored with this year’s Pierre Angénieux Tribute for achievement in Cinematography at Cannes. Director Claire Denis gave a beautiful introduction, replete with references to lenses (“they are both companions and safety barriers”) and memories of a viewfinder they both received from Wim Wenders (“le viewfinder”).
Agnes accepted the award (a personalized S35 Optimo Zoom, I think it was a 28-76) with a moving speech and gracious thanks to Angenieux “for being the great spirit of cinema, for providing these precious objects, lenses, mysterious alchemy that transform ideas into images.”

THINKING IN COLOUR by Steven Poster. ASC

Many of you know that I’m a cinematographer. The first thing I do when I get a call to interview for a movie is read the script. As soon as I start to read, I start seeing images. Those images are in colour. And as I continue to read, the palette of the project becomes clearer in my head.
In the latest instalment of Letter From America which features in the July edition of British Cinematographer, Steven Poster ASC explores how the introduction of 6P Colour marks a giant step toward the holy grail of end-to-end, device independent, colour management.

Nya filmfonden New Dawn lanseras på filmfestivalen i Cannes
