Women and the Silent Screen

Professor Jane Gaines (Columbia University) will deliver the keynote address: “Women and the Cinematification of the World”. A plenary panel “Fragments Fever” will be dedicated to archival work, a special focus of this conference. Archival screenings of rare material from the Swedish Film Institute and the Netherlands Film Museum, with piano accompaniment, will be an important part of the program.

The conference also includes scholarly panels related to women and cinema during the first four decades of film history. The historical and theoretical issues include the roles of women as directors, screenwriters, producers and actors, but also as filmgoers.

Women and the Silent Screen V invite its participants to scholarly exchange in the open and dynamic spirit that has characterised the four previous conferences in Utrecht, Santa Cruz, Montréal and Guadalajara. The Stockholm conference takes place in the Department of Cinema Studies, located in Filmhuset in the capital city of Sweden, with the excellent archival resources and screening facilities of the Swedish Film Institute.
